Asia and the Near East host some of the world's most ancient civilizations. Exploring these regions' languages and cultures opens doors to incredibly diverse traditions of philosophy, religion, and social customs. These areas are home to most of the planet's non-Christian population, with Asia maintaining its mystical allure through Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, despite many Asian nations leading modern political and economic developments. The Near East, where Christianity, Judaism, and Islam originated, remains a frequently misunderstood region of immense economic, strategic, and religious significance.

University-level Japanese studies enable students to achieve advanced communication skills while deepening their appreciation of Japan's culture. Learners will discover Japan's artistic legacy through literature, philosophy, visual arts, music, and other cultural expressions. Japanese language and literature courses expose students to this rich heritage while equipping them with linguistic and intercultural competencies valuable for diverse career paths.

Recent BYU Japanese program graduates have entered law, engineering, computer science, and MBA programs, with some continuing to medical school. Others have pursued advanced degrees at top U.S. universities or embarked on careers in government, military service, and international business where their Japanese proficiency proves invaluable. Some graduates work as translators or language educators.

BYU's Japanese program aims to cultivate cultural understanding and language proficiency for meaningful personal and professional engagement with Japanese society. The curriculum promotes independent learning skills for continuous growth while aligning with the university's educational mission.

The program welcomes complete beginners alongside students with prior Japanese exposure, including heritage speakers. The major develops critical thinking, communication abilities, historical context, and global perspectives regarding Japan.

Students are advised to take StDev 317 during late sophomore or early junior year. As liberal arts degrees offer broad preparation rather than specific career training, this course helps students clarify educational and professional objectives while exploring graduate programs, internships, and career paths. Participants will learn job search strategies and employment acquisition techniques relevant to their specialization.
