This field explores how power dynamics, meaning creation, group initiatives, and civic engagement intersect with societal and cultural evolution. Faculty and students in the program investigate these relationships through multiple lenses, such as national and cross-border phenomena, grassroots activism, economic behavior's cultural significance, metropolitan organizations, and religion's global manifestations. By examining frameworks, terminologies, and customs that influence self-conception, disparities, and ethical systems, we explore how individuals encounter these realities and perceive potential for structural change.
Learners can enhance their Sociology Department studies by enrolling in classes from Political Science, Historical Studies, and Anthropology departments, as well as the Heller School for Social Policy. The program also promotes utilizing resources from affiliated Boston-area institutions and research centers.
