The Sociology Department and Community & Environmental Sociology Department jointly run an integrated graduate program in sociology, equipping students for academic research, teaching careers, or practical applications. This program awards both a Master of Science in sociology and a Doctor of Philosophy in sociology, while also providing a minor option for doctoral candidates from other disciplines. The curriculum encompasses all key sociological fields, with the program frequently ranking among the nation's best in doctoral program evaluations.
With renowned faculty, exceptional peer-supported students, growing diversity among scholars, comprehensive course offerings across sociological disciplines, active research initiatives, and a vibrant campus atmosphere, UW-Madison stands as an ideal institution for those pursuing sociology or community and environmental sociology studies.
The graduate sociology program accepts students pursuing doctoral degrees, requiring them to complete a Master of Science en route to their Ph.D. or waiving this requirement for those with prior thesis-based Master's degrees. While some students exit after obtaining their Master's for public or private sector roles, most Ph.D. graduates secure academic teaching/research posts or find research/administrative positions in government agencies, non-profits, or corporate organizations.
International applicants must have a degree comparable to a regionally accredited U.S. bachelor’s degree.
