Music transcends mere notes and sounds, encompassing technical mastery, cultural significance, and expressive communication. At Brandeis, we embrace a holistic approach to music education that addresses all these facets.
Our undergraduate curriculum weaves together music history, theory, composition, and performance. As a music major, you'll complete one to two years of theoretical study and musicianship training, along with three semesters of music history. You'll join university ensembles and select electives from diverse offerings. For specialized focus, you can choose among five distinct tracks: composition, cultural studies, history, performance, or musical theater performance.
Our program cultivates profound understanding of music's complexityfrom fundamental principles to diverse styles and performance techniqueswhile equipping you for multiple career paths. Alumni frequently pursue advanced degrees in performance, composition, musicology, production, and technology. Others establish careers as music educators, arts leaders, performers, composers, conductors, theater directors, media producers, and digital arts specialistswith some entering fields like medicine, law, and general education.
