An independent interdisciplinary major (IIM) enables students with varied academic passions to create a customized program beyond standard offerings. Brandeis fosters close student-faculty engagement through its learner-centered approach, creating the perfect environment for developing an independent major.
For an IIM, you'll design an academic plan incorporating at least three departments, allowing exploration of your subject through multiple frameworks and viewpoints. After approval (due by fall semester of junior year), you'll collaborate with three selected faculty advisors while completing the 12 required courses. Your IIM journey concludes with a senior capstone project.
This program encourages genuinely innovative, cross-disciplinary exploration, as demonstrated by recent themes like: Media and Communication Studies, Conflict Resolution Studies, Global Food Systems, and Philosophy of Political Economy.
