The University provides both Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) options for the Interdisciplinary Studies Major. While no strict distinctions exist between these degrees, B.S. programs typically focus on applied fields, whereas the B.A. is generally associated with liberal arts and social sciences. The degree type awarded usually aligns with those offered by the participating academic departments.
Students pursuing an Interdisciplinary Studies Major must maintain a minimum 2.50 cumulative GPA. Each major should form a cohesive academic program centered around a well-defined theme. The program title should be concise (three to five words) and reflect its core academic focus rather than career goals, unless these directly align.
Approval for an Interdisciplinary Studies Major must occur before a student completes more than 27 semester units toward the major or 40 units toward the degree. The program requires a minimum of 35 units for the B.A. or 36 units for the B.S., with a maximum of 62 units for either degree. At least 24 upper-division (junior/senior level) units are required, spanning at least two distinct disciplines. Both degree options require completion of 120 total units.
Compared to the Liberal Studies Major, the Interdisciplinary Studies Major demands greater specialization within chosen disciplines. Students are expected to advance beyond introductory coursework in their selected fields.
