The Master of Sacred Music (MSM) program is now welcoming applications for Fall 2025, offering specializations in both choral and organ studies. The School of Theology recognizes and honors how artistic expression enhances theological learning, especially music's capacity for transformation and spiritual renewal. This joint program with Boston University's School of Music leads the way in professional music ministry education, featuring two focus areas: organ performance and choral direction.
Through the exceptional resources of BU's School of Music and School of Theology, students develop skills for faith community leadership while training as performers, academics, and educators. The full-time program spans two years, with an accelerated dual-degree option allowing students to combine the MSM with a Master of Divinity (MDiv) in just four years - ideal for those pursuing church music vocations or seeking deeper ministerial preparation.
The MSM program equips graduates for musical leadership in faith communities, preparing them professionally for careers as church musicians specializing in either organ or choral work.
Key learning objectives of the MSM include:
Developing theological reflection skills with graduate-level understanding of scripture, church history, worship practices, and theology,
Gaining fundamental knowledge of music theory and historical development,
Achieving specialized expertise in sacred music repertoire (both vocal and instrumental),
