The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in costume production at Boston University College of Fine Arts offers aspiring theatre professionals the chance to develop their artistic voice while honing their technical skills. Through the MFA costume production curriculum, graduate students strengthen their creative expression, collaboration abilities, and production expertise via practical, guided experiences across diverse theatrical productions and academic coursework. With intimate class sizes of eight to ten students and a favorable 10:2 student-to-faculty ratio, the program equips graduates for impactful careers in theatrical arts. The comprehensive training features a demanding course structure that thoughtfully combines draping, pattern-making, tailoring, historical studies, design principles, and explorations in millinery and fabric dyeing through interconnected classroom projects and production work.
Core coursework examines both traditional and theatrical techniques for pattern drafting, garment construction, and tailoring spanning from the 13th through 21st centuries. Students enjoy the flexibility to focus on specific historical eras during their studies. Every course emphasizes historical investigation as the foundation for all projects, providing crucial context for final creative work.
The program mandates successful completion of at least 60 credit hours across consecutive terms, typically spanning a two-year period.
