Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development's Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Science Education equips future science teachers with specialized training in biology, chemistry, general science, or physics through academic study and hands-on fieldwork. This program is tailored for individuals who already hold an undergraduate degree in their chosen science discipline and seek initial teaching certification. You'll enhance your leadership abilities, teaching methods, and subject expertise to foster scientific literacy and critical thinking skills in students.
The Science Education MAT program prioritizes real-world teaching experience, requiring participants to complete fieldwork each semester. Students progressively take on more classroom responsibilities, culminating in a full-time student teaching placement during their final term.
Graduates of the MAT program receive both a master's degree in science education and qualification for Massachusetts initial teaching certification in biology, chemistry, or physics (grades 8-12) or general science (grades 5-8).
This intensive MAT program can be finished in just one year. The typical schedule begins with Summer Session II in July, with students completing their studies and earning licensure by the following May. Although alternative timelines exist, the program mandates that the pre-practicum must start in fall, directly followed by the spring practicum experience.
