Students pursuing a combined MD/PhD degree typically initiate their doctoral studies after finishing two years of the BU Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine program. By this stage, they've already completed numerous courses needed for the PhD in Anatomy & Neurobiology. Following their doctoral work, they resume the medical school curriculum, earning both degrees upon finishing all requirements. The PhD component involves 24 units of mandatory coursework along with 4 units of seminars and electives, usually completed within three to five years. This full-time program primarily begins in fall, though spring admission may be possible in exceptional cases.
Program Objectives
The PhD in Anatomy & Neurobiology aims to equip students with advanced biomedical research capabilities and exceptional teaching skills. Graduates will be prepared for careers in academia, research, or healthcare. Upon completing the program, students will have achieved the following competencies:
Master anatomical systems, neuroscience, statistics, and related graduate-level subjects by completing the core curriculum.
Develop teaching expertise through the Teaching in Biomedical Sciences course and instructional roles in medical/graduate courses.
Acquire research proficiency via mentored laboratory work within the department.
Produce a publishable thesis demonstrating their research findings and scientific interpretation.
