The Social Studies Education program at Boston University equips students for teaching careers in both public and private schools, covering subjects like history, government/civics, geography, economics, and other social sciences. Graduates may become classroom instructors or work in museums, nonprofits, and alternative educational environments.
All BU undergraduates, including incoming freshmen and transfer students, complete coursework in the BU Hub—the university's integrated general education curriculum. These requirements can be met through major-related classes, electives, and cocurricular involvement. Social Studies Education majors typically fulfill BU Hub competencies in Philosophical, Aesthetic and Historical Interpretation; Diversity; Civic Engagement; Global Citizenship; Communication; and key Intellectual Toolkit components through Wheelock College of Education & Human Development courses. Arts & Sciences coursework may cover additional requirements, so students should consider Hub objectives when choosing classes. Remaining Hub criteria can be satisfied by selecting from diverse non-major courses or approved cocurricular activities.
