Pursuing a mechanical engineering degree at Boston University equips you with knowledge about robotic motion, aircraft flight dynamics, and how big data fuels groundbreaking concepts. You'll explore technological breakthroughs that power renewable energy systems, engineer living tissues, develop novel materials, and push scientific boundaries from the nanoscale to interplanetary dimensions. You'll craft practical engineering solutions to global challenges. The College of Engineering aims to develop societal engineers—graduates who leverage their technical training to better our world.

Mechanical engineering students can focus their studies in areas like aerospace systems, advanced manufacturing, sustainable energy solutions, nanoscale engineering, artificial intelligence applications, or technological entrepreneurship. Beyond academics, our mechanical engineers spearhead student organizations that test rocket propulsion systems (Rocket Propulsion Group, BURPG) and design high-performance vehicles (BU Racing, BU Baja SAE). They conduct cutting-edge research alongside faculty working on medical devices, flexible robotics, graphene applications, drone navigation systems, and 3D printing technologies. As a mechanical engineering student, you'll develop prototypes in the Engineering Product Innovation Center (EPIC), bring inventions to life at the IDG Capital Student Innovation Center (InnovateBU), and partner with business students to learn how engineers succeed in commercial environments.
