The Health Science major is a Bachelor of Science degree program that provides an interdisciplinary education in health sciences and global public health. The first two years combine foundational courses in biological sciences, humanities, and social sciences (fulfilling BU Hub requirements) with essential global health coursework. The final two years focus on applying health science principles to global public health challenges, featuring specialized training in qualitative and quantitative methods, plus concentrated study through a senior seminar. Students complete their education with a practicum, gaining real-world experience at local or international partner sites. Qualified students may pursue the Sargent College Senior Thesis for Distinction. The program integrates with three BU Study Abroad options and encourages international service-learning through Sargent Service Learning initiatives.
This major serves as strong preparation for the accelerated BS/MPH program or graduate studies in medicine, nursing, physician assistant programs, or physical therapy. Pre-med and pre-dental students follow a modified science curriculum to meet graduate program prerequisites.
Graduates earn a Bachelor of Science in Health Science with optional minor specializations. Career paths include health services (public health agencies, hospitals, insurance, or pharmaceuticals) or advanced study in public health, clinical professions, healthcare administration, business, or law. Strategic course selection enhances graduate school prospects. Qualified students may apply for the accelerated BS/MPH program through BU School of Public Health (see Sargent website for details).
