The Philosophy major offers an intellectually enriching education that empowers students through rigorous examination of their thought processes and behaviors. A philosophical mindset is characterized by consciously evaluating the logical consistency, thoroughness, and relevance of different viewpoints, arguments, and frameworks, all while acknowledging our human limitations within historical contexts. Developing these critical thinking skills strengthens students' capacity for interdisciplinary learning, enables meaningful contributions to diverse fields from arts to global affairs, and importantly, helps them navigate life's complexities and marvels. The Philosophy Department's primary objective is fostering these intellectual dispositions. With its rich heritage and diverse faculty expertise, the department explores this goal through six key research domains: analytic philosophy and logic, moral and political philosophy, philosophical history, phenomenology and pragmatism, philosophy of religion, and the philosophy and history of science.
