The Ethnic Studies program features an interdisciplinary major that takes a comparative perspective on the study of racial and ethnic minorities in the United States. With a curriculum emphasizing social justice, our program examines the cultures, histories, and lived experiences of communities of color, equipping graduates to thrive in diverse, multicultural environments.
The 36-unit Ethnic Studies major offers students significant flexibility to focus on a specific group while developing broad expertise in the histories, cultures, and social dynamics of various communities of color. Working with academic advisors, students customize their program to align with their personal objectives. The curriculum includes 18 units of core requirements, 12 units in a chosen concentration, and 6 units of electives. Concentration options include: American Indian Studies, Asian American Studies, Black Studies, Genders and Sexualities in Communities of Color, and Latinx/Chicanx Studies.
