At the heart of BU's English department lies a commitment to exploring literature in its full breadth and variety, spanning both timeless classics with their intricate stylistic and societal dimensions and modern creative expressions like digital media, graphic novels, and cultural innovations. Students engage with everything from medieval tales and Shakespearean drama to contemporary satire, poetry, experimental fiction, films, visual narratives, historical accounts of slavery, and performance art. Through examining these works and diverse literary theories, English majors cultivate sharp analytical abilities, linguistic expertise, and creative insight—skills essential for understanding both past civilizations and their lasting impact on today's cultural landscape.

English classes at BU typically maintain intimate seminar settings (fewer than 20 students), fostering personalized instruction and vibrant discussions. The curriculum prioritizes close reading, thorough examination, independent thought, polished writing, and meticulous research. Students refine these skills under the guidance of BU's most distinguished educators—faculty members who have earned numerous teaching accolades, including multiple Metcalf Awards, the University's most prestigious honor for instructional excellence.

Whether pursuing a major or minor, students enjoy extensive course options and flexible academic pathways. The English major consists of 10 carefully designed classes that expose students to diverse texts, literary movements, and critical approaches, while minors complete six English courses.
