This program offers a Bachelor of Science in Education focused on secondary education with a specialization in language arts. After completing the teacher certification requirements, you'll receive state certification to teach language arts for grades 9-12.
The curriculum covers three key components:
Foundation Level
Academic Studies
During the Foundation Level, you'll primarily fulfill general education prerequisites while beginning language arts coursework, including literature analysis and advanced composition classes.
Education courses through the College of Education & Human Development emphasize teaching methodologies for diverse developmental stages. These classes examine how cultural, political, historical, and economic factors impact students, educators, and educational institutions.
Practical Training
Foundation Level field experiences consist of:
Sixteen hours in language arts classrooms (when available), assisting students through tutoring and small-group instruction under teacher guidance, plus supervising and engaging with individual learners.
Twenty hours of service-learning at community organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters or Granny's House.
