Ball State's bachelor's program in Exceptional Needs: Intensive Intervention offers K-12 certification to equip future educators for teaching students with significant cognitive disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, multiple disabilities, health impairments, physical disabilities, and traumatic brain injuries. This thorough curriculum also incorporates elementary-level mild intervention studies. Beyond academic rigor, the program provides extensive hands-on training through school placements and community service projects. The final semester features two intensive 8-week teaching practicums, leading to dual Indiana teaching licenses (Intensive Interventions K-12 and Mild Interventions K-6). Specialists with Intensive Interventions certification enjoy strong employment prospects statewide and nationally. Within our complete special education curriculum, students master research-backed teaching methods, assessment techniques, curriculum adaptations, assistive technology applications, and communication support strategies for students needing significant interventions. The program emphasizes practical experience with four semesters of supervised fieldwork before the culminating teaching practicums. Elementary-level mild intervention coursework forms an integral part of this comprehensive training.
