As a history major at AUM, you'll develop versatile skills applicable to diverse career paths. You'll be taught by one of the Southeast's most distinguished history faculties, where each full-time professor has authored at least one publication in their specialty and remains actively engaged in the field.
Although numerous history graduates pursue rewarding careers as historians, museum archivists, documentary filmmakers, or curators, the American Historical Association reports that most history majors establish successful careers across various industries. A history degree equips students with adaptable competencies that make them valuable in nearly every professional sphere, including:
Educators
Corporate professionals
Legal practitioners
Authors, editors, or reporters
Media creators
On our picturesque Montgomery campus, AUM students learn amidst landmarks of both the Confederacy and Civil Rights Movement, gaining insight into these pivotal historical periods and their cultural impact. You'll master essential abilities like problem investigation, evidence assessment, and persuasive argumentation—skills that will serve you well in advanced studies or professional environments.
Additionally, you'll have opportunities to participate in the AUM Historical Review, a student-run journal featuring scholarly works on global, American, and Alabama history. The publication welcomes contributions such as film critiques, literary reviews, historical site analyses, interviews, and oral histories. The Department of History and World Cultures partners with the Alabama Department of Archives and History to offer valuable internship opportunities for history students.
