As highlighted by the American Historical Association, everyone interprets and recounts the past, meaning we all play a role in shaping history. This discipline serves as one of our most essential instruments for comprehending both ourselves and the world we inhabit. DePaul University's History Department champions this perspective, dedicating itself to collaborating with students, the academic community, and the public in a continuous exploration of the past and its diverse interpretations. The department focuses on the scholarly discussions that foster this understanding and examines how history connects to contemporary issues. DePaul's history curriculum offers extensive coverage across time periods and regions while allowing students to specialize in their areas of interest. The program balances humanistic and social scientific approaches to the field. Introductory courses (100-200 level) provide overviews of Asian, African, European, Latin American, North American, and World/Comparative History, with particular emphasis on analyzing primary sources. Advanced courses (300 level) delve into historiographical debates within specialized areas. All classes prioritize enhancing research, writing, and verbal communication abilities.
