The College of Sciences and Mathematics offers undergraduate and graduate programs in physical sciences, life sciences, and mathematics. It provides scientific and mathematical service courses for students across all other colleges and schools. The college encompasses the departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Geosciences, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics, along with the Arboretum, Natural History Museum, and Leach Science Center. These programs prepare students for dental, medical, and optometry schools, leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in various majors. The requirements are rigorous and demand strong academic ability and performance. Auburn University students fulfill these requirements by taking a core curriculum, and each student selects a major. It is recommended that students consult with COSAM pre-health advisors for specific course requirements, as these can differ between schools. The prerequisite courses for most U.S. dental, medical, and optometry schools are included in the curriculum model as required or elective courses. Students may opt for a major in another college or school but should meet with the COSAM Pre-Health Counseling Specialist early in their academic career to enhance their competitiveness as applicants. In their junior year, students must attend mandatory meetings on the application process, led by the COSAM Chairman of the Pre-Professional Advisory Committee in October. Additionally, pre-dentistry, pre-medicine, or pre-optometry students should take the DAT, MCAT, or OAT at least one year before entering professional school and submit applications to their chosen schools at that time.
