Environmental Public Health focuses on examining how natural and human-made surroundings influence human wellbeing through biological, chemical, and physical factors. This field teaches students to reduce health risks by controlling environmental dangers and improving conditions in air, water, soil, living spaces, work environments, and neighborhoods. The EPH specialization in the Biomedical Sciences program stands among just 28 nationally accredited programs by the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council, making it Colorado's sole accredited program of its kind.
The curriculum starts with core science classes covering biology, physics, general and organic chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, physiology, mathematics, and statistics. Students then apply this scientific knowledge to address real-world environmental health challenges. The program emphasizes hands-on learning through field projects involving data collection, problem assessment, solution evaluation, and presenting findings both verbally and in writing. Every Environmental Public Health student gains practical experience through a credit-bearing internship with either a private organization or public health institution.
