Develop into a leader who enhances individual wellness by applying expert knowledge to create and implement impactful physical education initiatives. You'll gain essential instructional competencies sought by educational institutions, youth organizations, and employers prioritizing health. The MPE curriculum equips students to effectively teach and research high-quality physical education programs for learners from preschool to 12th grade.
This adaptable program enables students to customize their studies to align with personal interests and career goals. Three distinct pathways are available:
The teacher certification track delivers the academic foundation and practical training required for Arizona public school physical education certification post-graduation. Participants complete 58 credit hours—33 for the master's degree and 25 for certification requirements—including internships before a full-time student teaching placement.
The physical education endorsement track introduces students to contemporary developments in school-based physical education, with specialization options in elementary, secondary, or adapted physical education. Ideal for certified teachers in other subjects seeking physical education credentials, this 33-credit pathway fulfills Arizona Department of Education endorsement requirements.
The pedagogy research track suits students exploring physical education teaching research, particularly those with existing teaching credentials considering future doctoral studies. This 33-credit option focuses on academic inquiry.
All pathways incorporate training in developing, executing, and evaluating comprehensive school physical activity initiatives, aligning with worldwide movements to increase physical activity among students, school personnel, and community members.
Teacher certification graduates receive an ASU recommendation for Arizona Secondary Education (6-12) certification plus a PreK-12 physical education endorsement. Candidates must also pass Arizona's subject-specific and professional knowledge examinations through either the National Evaluation Series or Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments.
