This MA program views global health as extending far beyond traditional international public health. It highlights how significant health issues arise from diverse influences beyond just disease—encompassing cultural, ecological, evolutionary, historical, institutional, social, and technological dimensions.
Sustainable solutions to urgent global health problems must account for all these elements and their intricate interconnections. The program trains students to see health not merely as the absence of illness, but as shaped by complex interactions between ecology, politics, history, culture, social structures, and evolutionary biology. It prioritizes tackling the root causes (structural and cultural) of poor health in resource-limited communities and an increasingly interconnected world. By integrating social and life sciences with practical research and implementation, the curriculum emphasizes teamwork as essential for developing lasting, impactful approaches to global health challenges.
