The PhD program in geography provides students with rigorous academic and professional training, offering a solid foundation for either advanced specialization or direct career entry. Designed with adaptability in mind, the curriculum enables students to tailor their studies to align with their unique aspirations and professional objectives.
Beyond cutting-edge coursework, students gain hands-on experience through the Spatial Analysis Research Center and Urban Climate Research Center, collaborating with distinguished faculty on varied research initiatives. They work alongside leading geography scholars, including four National Academy of Sciences members and emerging experts in climate science, sustainability, environmental research, urban heat island studies, GIS, and related fields.
The program empowers students to craft a customized academic journey that aligns with their geographic interests. They explore diverse coursework and research opportunities across four interdisciplinary themes, reflecting the faculty's expertise in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning:

Applicants must fulfill the requirements of both the Graduate College and The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Applicants are eligible to apply to the program if they have earned a bachelor's or master's degree, in any field, from a regionally accredited institution.
Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = A) in the last 60 hours of their first bachelor's degree program, or applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = A) in an applicable master's degree program.
