The AuD degree program spans three years and includes foundational science courses, professional training, and hands-on clinical practice. Maintaining full-time status is essential since graduate-level courses are only available once per academic year. The curriculum and course sequence are directly linked to clinical practicum placements, making continuous enrollment vital for on-time program completion.
Students may choose to graduate after three years or pursue a fourth-year clinical externship for up to three extra credit hours of training. Graduation requires at least 850 clinical hours, achieved within the first three years. Additional practicum hours—toward the 1,820 needed for ASHA's CCC-A credential—can be fulfilled during the fourth-year externship under an ASHA-certified audiologist's guidance. Remaining certification hours may also be completed post-graduation. However, students should consider state licensure rules when deciding whether to undertake an externship, as some states mandate its completion for initial licensure.
