The Bachelor of Arts in Education (BAE) program specializing in early childhood education equips students to address the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional requirements of children from infancy through age 8 or third grade. This curriculum emphasizes developmental psychology and contemporary teaching methodologies for young learners, covering strategies for building inclusive classrooms, developing lesson plans, delivering instruction, and evaluating student progress.
Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College employs a collaborative training model, where students gain hands-on experience through internships and teaching residencies alongside peer groups. Participants receive mentorship from ASU faculty and experienced educators, fostering teamwork skills to effectively support children's academic and emotional growth. These practical components bridge theory and practice, giving students repeated opportunities to implement classroom strategies.
The program includes progressive field experiences culminating in a full-time teaching residency. Under the supervision of certified mentors and university faculty, students apply their coursework knowledge in real educational settings.
Upon completion, graduates qualify for ASU's institutional recommendation for Arizona teaching certification in Early Childhood (birth to grade 3) and can obtain a Structured English Immersion endorsement from the Arizona Department of Education. Public school teaching positions require passing state-mandated educator examinations, either the National Evaluation Series or Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments.
