The Master of Arts in Sociology Research and Practice equips you for doctoral studies or professional roles in social advocacy, research, education, human services, or policy development. Through this program, you'll master research techniques for studying health and society, undertake a Washington, DC-focused research initiative, enhance your qualitative and quantitative analysis skills, and refine your ability to communicate research findings to diverse audiences.
Students dive into investigations examining health's social determinants—especially concerning racial/ethnic disparities, socioeconomic status, gender, and sexuality—while exploring connections to urban studies, migration patterns, educational systems, and activism. What distinguishes AU's program is its intensive practicum component, where you'll collaborate with faculty across four semesters to produce publishable-quality research. This hands-on experience teaches essential research methodologies and presentation techniques, offering real-world practice alongside professors conducting innovative studies aimed at enhancing community health and welfare.
