Music research at York University spans diverse disciplines. Our experts cover historical, cultural and critical music studies, composition (both acoustic and electronic), performance (with emphasis on modern techniques and historically informed approaches), music theory, pedagogy, psychology and cognition, artificial intelligence in music, and emerging sound technologies. Numerous initiatives cross disciplinary boundaries, fostering partnerships with scholars outside the Music department.
These research directions are organized within our three specialized hubs: the Contemporary Music Research Group, the Music in Society Research Group, and the Music Technology and Science Research Group.
