Earn your PhD in Theatre through a collaborative and nurturing research environment at our conservatoire, the Guildford School of Acting (GSA). Our scholarly work spans both conventional and practice-based approaches, examining performance through historical and modern cultural lenses. Research areas include: Theatre historiography, Modern dance techniques, Methods for actor development, Musical theater studies, Cognitive approaches to performance, Arts addressing mental health and accessibility. As a research-focused conservatoire, we provide specialized resources for practice-based investigations and hands-on research methodologies. GSA's research initiatives at Surrey feature exclusive access to the Surrey Shakespeare Center, housed within our institution.

Qualification Requirements

For all our research degrees in performing arts, entry is based on a good honours degree and usually an MA in a relevant arts subject or appropriate professional experience. Candidates submitting proposals that include practice-based research will be required to evidence appropriate experience and expertise in the relevant area of practice. IELTS Academic: 6.5 or above (or equivalent) with 6.0 in each individual category. TOEFL (ibt) - 88 overall with 18 in Reading, 19 in Listening, 19 in Speaking and 23 in Writing.
