Pursuing a PhD allows you to deeply explore a specialized area within drama, theatre, or performance at the highest academic level. East 15 Acting School, with its expanding research reputation and globally recognized excellence, provides an ideal environment for this advanced study.

At East 15, research students follow one of two distinct pathways. The PhD in Drama and Performance follows traditional academic assessment through a written thesis and oral defense. Alternatively, the PhD Drama and Performance (Practice-as-Research) program evaluates candidates through practical performance work, accompanied by a thesis that examines the creative practice within the research context, plus an oral examination. Typical practice-based research areas may encompass: stage direction, dramatic composition, actor development, theatrical design (including sets, audio, illumination, and costumes), and experimental performance.
