The Centre for Medieval Studies (CMS) stands as the United Kingdom's most established and extensive hub for interdisciplinary medieval scholarship. Our specialists cover more than a millennium of history across diverse academic fields, providing specialized instruction in paleography, diplomatic studies, and medieval languages.
Emerging academic areas will enhance your current knowledge, delivering tailored interdisciplinary courses alongside top-tier instruction in Archaeology, Literature and Language, History, and Art History. You'll develop an understanding of how geographical contexts, historical timelines, and evidentiary sources interconnect while delving into your preferred areas of study. Our international research and teaching scope encompasses medieval Britain and Scandinavian territories (including Viking studies).
Our innovative interdisciplinary track investigates Islamic world cultures through the lenses of literature, history, archaeology, and artistic traditions. Leveraging our faculty's diverse expertise, you can design a customized curriculum highlighting the intricate relationships throughout the medieval Mediterranean region and extending to Arabia, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Anatolia, Central Asia, and East Africa.
