The Post Primary PGCE is a full-time, one-year program designed to equip students for a teaching career. Upon successfully finishing their initial teacher education, graduates can demonstrate their teaching proficiency and receive the Post Graduate Certificate in Education, enabling registration with the General Teaching Council of Northern Ireland. Additionally, they earn 60 CATS credits applicable toward a Master's in Education. The PGCE program carries a total of 120 credits (60 at Master's level 7 and 60 at postgraduate level 6). This course provides aspiring post-primary educators with the tools to become skilled history teachers. Participants explore current research-driven advancements in history education and pedagogy, aligned with the updated Northern Ireland Curriculum. The program highlights history's role in the curriculum and its connections to other disciplines. Key educational themes addressed include learning theories, literacy and numeracy enhancement, classroom management, assessment strategies, and integrating Information and Communication Technology skills.
The PGCE serves as both an academic credential and professional certification. Graduates not only earn 60 CAT academic credits redeemable for a future Master's in Education but also qualify for teaching recognition by the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland. While many pursue this program to specialize in a subject area, it equally emphasizes universal teaching principles applicable across all disciplines. Beyond academic preparation, the course trains educators to support students' personal growth and their contributions to society, the economy, and environmental stewardship.
