Our BA in Art History with a year abroad offers four unique and interconnected years of exploring art and architectural history.
Begin with a foundational year in art history, with the choice to learn a language. Enhance these core skills during your overseas year, studying at one of our renowned partner institutions across Europe, the USA, and China while immersing yourself in local language, culture, and artistic traditions. You'll gain comprehensive training in art historical methods and practice.
At York, you'll encounter an exceptional diversity of art and architecture spanning regions from Europe and the Americas to the Middle East, North Africa, and East, South, and Southeast Asia. The curriculum covers periods from late antiquity to contemporary art.
Art History combines traditional humanities with practical career skills, fostering versatile abilities. We collaborate with major institutions like the Tate, National Gallery, V&A, and York Museums Trust, as well as unconventional spaces including country houses, maritime museums, and churches. These partnerships enrich our teaching and research, providing you with valuable connections. The interdisciplinary approach of art history also lets you expand your skills and interests through our ties with other departments in the Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences faculties.
