With exceptional research achievements and specialized knowledge across social, cultural, economic, transnational, environmental, and digital history, Sussex stands out as an ideal destination for History PhD candidates. Our faculty members actively research, teach, and publish on historical topics spanning Britain, Europe, and worldwide, ensuring supervision by top experts in your chosen area.
We offer both PhD and MPhil programs, which vary in length and research scope.

A PhD requires your research to significantly advance knowledge in your field through original contributions.
An MPhil involves independent research with a narrower focus than a PhD, culminating in a Master of Philosophy degree. You may have the option to upgrade to a PhD during your MPhil studies.
