Pursuing a PhD or MPhil in Ancient History allows you to embark on an extensive research project driven by your personal academic interests. The full-time PhD program spans three years (or six years part-time), while the MPhil requires two years of full-time study (or four years part-time). For the PhD, you'll produce a thesis of up to 100,000 words, whereas the MPhil requires 60,000 words, both showcasing original research that advances the field. This culminates in an oral defense of your work (known as a viva voce or viva). Both programs demand rigorous academic engagement, focusing on pioneering research related to Greco-Roman history and archaeology. Our department's expertise ranges from ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilizations to modern European history. The vibrant research culture at Swansea, fueled by both faculty and postgraduate scholars, creates an intellectually stimulating environment. You'll refine essential research methodologies applicable to all areas of ancient historical study, supplemented by campus skills development programs. Opportunities include presenting your work at departmental seminars and the College of Arts and Humanities Postgraduate conference. From your second year, you may teach undergraduate tutorials and seminars after receiving training and compensation. Approved conference attendance and external research trips may also receive financial assistance.
