Material culture research forms a core focus in our department, evident through our extensive research projects and the many postdoctoral and doctoral scholars we support.
Our faculty includes multiple experts who concentrate primarily on material analysis. Their specialties encompass ceramics, metals, and glass, while also extending to stone and other substances. Beyond our standard undergraduate and graduate materials instruction, we've offered numerous well-received short courses in ceramic analysis.
Our material culture investigations cover periods from the Neolithic era to early modernity, examining production, consumption, classification, and analytical techniques through experimental, ethnographic, and scientific approaches. We've explored early copper metallurgy, experimental ironworking, ceramic and glass studies, and have extensive experience with diverse historical and regional collections. Current projects emphasize British, Greek, and Chinese materials. The department boasts outstanding microscopy equipment and specialized materials laboratories.
