Pursuing a PhD with us unlocks diverse career paths in academia, policy, and the private sector. Our economics research at Sussex employs cutting-edge methodologies with a practical orientation, engaging with scholarly and policy discussions across these key areas where we welcome research proposals: applied microeconomics in both developed and developing nations, covering labor markets, education and skill development, family economics, and crime-related legal studies. Our experts have provided policy guidance to the UK government on minimum wage regulations, educational oversight, and compensation structures for educators and armed forces members. The Digital Futures at Work Research Centre operates within the University of Sussex Business School, alongside our work on global economics, trade systems, and industrial strategies across different economic contexts. The department hosts the UK Trade Policy Observatory (UKTPO), which analyzes post-Brexit trade policies while training and advising policymakers. Our development economics specialization offers insights into migration patterns, conflict studies, poverty reduction, and agricultural economics through our partnership with the Sussex Centre for Migration Research. Additional research strengths include environmental and resource economics, behavioral and experimental economics, and theoretical economic frameworks.
