The Surrey Space Centre stands as the UK's premier academic hub for space engineering research. Home to leading experts and strong industry connections, it provides an exceptional setting for aspiring space scientists, engineers, and business innovators.
As a PhD researcher at the Surrey Space Centre, you'll collaborate with faculty members, postdoctoral scholars, and fellow graduate students pioneering advancements in affordable small satellites and cutting-edge technologies. You'll gain from strategic alliances with industry leaders like Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) and Airbus DS. Upon earning your doctorate, you'll qualify for membership with the Institute of Engineering and Technology and can pursue chartered engineer recognition through both the Engineering Council UK and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
The doctoral program allows up to four years of full-time study. You'll receive guidance from two Surrey-based academic advisors, plus any external collaborative supervisors. Your primary supervisor, a specialist in your research field, will oversee your progress. These mentors will assist in shaping your research objectives, adapting them as needed throughout your project. They'll recommend resources to develop required technical skills and provide thesis preparation support. External supervisors often join to offer specialized knowledge or facilitate access to unique resources and institutions.
