The School of Mathematics and Physics hosts doctoral candidates from across the globe, backed by 54 dedicated, research-focused faculty members. Our PhD initiatives offer avenues for experimental, theoretical, and computational investigations spanning both foundational and practical physics domains, including nuclear and radiation physics, astrophysics, photonics, soft matter, quantum technologies, and medical physics.
You'll gain chances to work alongside international researchers and leverage our key alliances with institutions like the National Physical Laboratory and Royal Surrey County Hospital. As members of the South East Physics Network (SEPnet), a consortium of nine top-tier universities advancing physics excellence, you'll join GRADnet - England's most extensive postgraduate research community.
Our graduates boast outstanding employment prospects, with all physics research students securing positions or pursuing further education (Graduate Outcomes 2023). The collaborative, cross-disciplinary, and industry-aligned nature of our research ensures you'll build professional networks, acquire valuable skills, and obtain hands-on experience that enhances your career competitiveness. Typically, our Physics PhD program requires three to four years of full-time study.
You'll receive guidance from two University of Surrey-based supervisors. Your primary supervisor, a specialist in your research field, will mentor you throughout your doctoral journey. Both supervisors will assist in shaping your research goals and methodology while helping you develop the necessary experimental, theoretical, and computational expertise.
