The School of Physics at Bristol University stands among the UK's premier physics research institutions - our research ranks 4th nationally according to THE's REF 2021 analysis. This current excellence rests on a century-long legacy of groundbreaking contributions, from the Nobel Prize-winning discovery of the pi meson in 1950 to pioneering work in quantum mechanics.

As a research student, you'll join our vibrant Physics Graduate School community of 250 students representing diverse global backgrounds with excellent gender representation. We maintain robust industry connections and strong ties to Bristol's distinctive startup ecosystem, offering placement opportunities and collaborative training initiatives during your research.

Our Graduate School provides comprehensive support through social and scientific events, specialized physics skills training, orientation programs, community building, and guidance through university processes. We also facilitate professional teaching development - many doctoral students work as paid Graduate Teaching Assistants, contributing to undergraduate education while pursuing their research.

Renowned for cohort-based research training, our School has secured UK national funding for multiple Centres of Doctoral Training over the past decade, spanning cutting-edge fields from Quantum Engineering to AI and Advanced Computing.

We offer research degrees across six specialized themes. Prospective students are welcome to consult with theme leaders for general guidance or potential supervisors for project-specific discussions before applying.

Applications require a CV, a personal statement highlighting your research motivations, and qualification details. Please consult our Admissions Statement for complete requirements.
