For over a quarter century, the University of Surrey has pioneered groundbreaking research in environmental and sustainability studies. Our work spans from examining public environmental perceptions to developing solar energy solutions for sub-Saharan Africa, with researchers employing creative methods to build a more sustainable, fair, and secure world. Founded in 1992, the Centre for Environment and Sustainability (CES) has earned global recognition for its interdisciplinary research and education across sustainability fields. Key areas of impact include: Assessing life cycles and environmental effects, Advancing circular economy principles, Conducting techno-economic evaluations, Exploring water-energy-food relationships, Developing bioenergy solutions, Facilitating low-carbon shifts, Studying sustainable behaviors, Redefining prosperity models, Shaping environmental policies.
We spearhead two of the University's primary research focuses - sustainability and urban development - while hosting the renowned ESRC-funded Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP) under Professor Tim Jackson's leadership. Through extensive collaborations across campus, we offer exceptional opportunities to engage with and advance this crucial field of study.
Our programs enable exploration of both theoretical frameworks and practical sustainability applications. Numerous postgraduate researchers collaborate with local and global enterprises, government agencies, and international organizations including the UN, IPCC, WWF, and WHO on impactful projects.
