Renowned for its academic excellence, the School of Economics stands out in both research and education. According to the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, our School achieved 6th place in the UK for research intensity, ranked 10th for research output, and secured 12th position overall. Additionally, we're recognized among the top 10 institutions for business and economics in the UK by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020. Our Economics PhD program serves as the second phase of a comprehensive four-year journey, beginning with the one-year MRes Economics course followed by a three-year PhD (with potential extensions available). Graduates from our PhD program are highly valued by prestigious economics departments, business schools, and research centers globally. The initial year focuses on core modules covering microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics alongside research development, while the remaining two years are devoted entirely to independent research culminating in a doctoral thesis.
