This focus area connects to two critical policy discussions today. First, environmental policy formulation, which faces competitiveness issues at every level (evident in agreements like the Paris Climate Accord). Second, trade liberalization initiatives, which grapple with disparities in environmental regulations between regions (seen in stalled negotiations like the WTO's Doha Round). Research in this domain is broadening to include wider trade and foreign investment (FDI) subjects. Significant theoretical contributions have emerged regarding trade and market dynamics, while studies on FDI's influence on productivity are gaining increasing attention.
