Earning a PhD typically takes three years of study, while an MRes or MPhil can be completed in one year with a final dissertation submission. Those holding a Master's degree may pursue a PhD, which requires producing an original research thesis of up to 100,000 words. Throughout your doctoral research and thesis writing, you'll develop professional expertise in research methodologies, communication, presentation techniques, organizational skills, and specialized academic disciplines. Our institution provides PhD guidance across multiple fields, such as: Global Scottish studies, European and International History, Science and technology history, Medical history, Diplomacy and global security, Oral history traditions, and Genealogical research
Students would normally require a first-class or upper second-class UK Honours degree, or overseas equivalent, in history or a related subject. For PhD applications, we also normally require a Masters degree, or overseas equivalent, in history or a related subject.
