Overview The Department takes great pride in its vibrant community of graduate researchers. According to a recent HEFCE report, King's College London leads all British universities in PhD completion rates. Our War Studies Department has earned recognition from prestigious organizations including the British Academy, the Arts and Humanities Research Council, and the Economic and Social Research Council. Currently, nearly 200 doctoral candidates are conducting research within the Department. We welcome approximately 60 new students annually to our MPhil/PhD program, who receive guidance from faculty members in both the War Studies and Defence Studies departments. We particularly encourage applications from students whose research aligns with and strengthens our departmental research groups, programs, and centers. All students are expected to actively participate in our research units, enriching our academic environment and supporting the Department's research objectives. In accordance with College policy, we conduct progress reviews for all students (full-time and part-time) within three months of enrollment, followed by another review after nine months. Subsequent evaluations occur every six months. Our supervisors provide comprehensive support across multiple aspects of doctoral study: Research Planning Academic Mentoring Progress Assessment Professional Advice Personal Support Career Development Opportunities. Flexible Learning Options For working professionals unable to meet standard residency requirements, we offer a blended distance learning MPhil/PhD program in War Studies. While primary supervision occurs remotely, participants must attend biannual progress reviews. The program utilizes our online Doctoral Training resources, and students may supplement their studies with relevant modules from our Online MA programs when beneficial for their research development.
