The School of Social Work & Social Policy provides MPhil and PhD programs in:
Criminology
Public health & health policy
Social policy
Social work
In Social Policy, we provide guidance across all the School's primary research fields (listed below). Our expertise spans historical and modern subjects, and we encourage applications from students focused on Scotland, the UK, and international contexts. Current student projects explore diverse themes, from volunteerism and community engagement in modern Scotland to evaluating how social policies affect Human Development in Sierra Leone.
Our Social Work faculty also supervise across all research domains. Ongoing projects examine support systems for disabled children and families, aspects of criminal justice social work, and the experiences of children in care and care leavers. Many students collaborate with experts from the Centre for Excellence for Children’s Care and Protection (CELCIS) and the Children and Young People’s Centre for Justice (CYCJ).
The Criminology PhD program leverages expertise from both Social Work & Social Policy and the School of Law. Supervision is available in areas like youth justice, criminalization, sentencing, rehabilitation, prison healthcare, and prisoner-family relationships. We maintain strong ties with the Children and Young People’s Centre for Justice (CYCJ) and the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research (SCCJR).
Additionally, the School oversees a specialized PhD program in Public Health and Health Policy, collaborating with the Centre for Health Policy and other university departments. Current research includes projects on mental health challenges among women in poverty and the connections between mental health, homelessness, and recovery.
Applicants are generally required to have a first-class or a strong upper second-class UK Honours degree, or overseas equivalent, in a relevant discipline (though there is some flexibility within this, e.g. for students who have a relevant Masters degree with merit/distinction).
