The Doctor of Education (EdD) is a practice-oriented doctoral program designed for experienced education professionals. While maintaining the same academic standards as a PhD, this degree focuses on practical applications and follows a modular format. Instead of providing teaching certification, the EdD equips you with advanced research skills at the Master's level while deepening your theoretical and practical knowledge of educational policies. The program expands your expertise in learning processes and explores various education-related fields. What distinguishes Strathclyde's EdD program is the opportunity to specialize in one of eight focus areas that align with the research expertise of The Strathclyde Institute of Education. To earn a specialized EdD, students must complete all elective courses in their chosen concentration along with their dissertation work. The available specializations and study options include:Enhancing Teacher Development (part-time and full-time)School Administration (part-time and full-time)Philosophical Inquiry with Children (part-time and full-time)Autism Studies (part-time and full-time)Early Childhood Education (part-time only)Inclusive Learning Practices (part-time only)Educational Technology (part-time and full-time)Philosophy and Cultural Studies (part-time and full-time; daytime classes)Students may also opt for a general track (part-time or full-time), which allows them to select electives across all specialization areas.
Applicants will normally have a Masters Degree in Education (or closely related area). Exceptionally, a candidate with substantive professional experience may be considered for admission provided they can demonstrate understanding of and a capacity to engage with the different dimensions of educational research.
