Mechanical engineers are vital in transforming our world and propelling technological and infrastructural progress. Our BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering program immerses you in cutting-edge advancements like automation, smart manufacturing, and other innovations powering Industry 4.0. You'll gain a robust foundation in core engineering concepts, including thermodynamics and fluid/structure mechanics. Beyond technical expertise, you'll acquire contemporary business strategies and leadership capabilities, equipping you with versatile skills for corporate environments and the ability to oversee projects and teams effectively. The curriculum challenges you with practical scenarios, such as optimizing inventory management through tracking goods flow, stock levels, and cost-effectiveness. You'll also explore control systems and quality assurance, emphasizing compliance with ISO standards. Hands-on experiences may include building automated inspection systems to ensure product quality, alongside studying robotics and electronic solutions. Students utilize state-of-the-art CAD, CFD, and FEA software for creative design and performance simulation. Our facilities boast industry-grade CNC machines for precision manufacturing, plus labs for materials testing and analyzing friction/vibration phenomena. The £1.3 million Smart Zone offers fabrication spaces with augmented reality tools, where you'll master laser cutters, 3D printers, and rapid prototyping methods. For advanced materials research, we provide access to the £20 million Innovation Enterprise Zone's digital hub, connecting students with industry partners for real-world innovation projects. An optional 12-month placement enhances your career readiness. Graduates receive the BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering qualification. The first year establishes fundamental engineering knowledge shared across disciplines (Automotive, Aeronautical, etc.), while the second year advances into mechanical systems, manufacturing, and automation. The final year centers on a capstone project and specialized modules like FEA, CFD, and sustainable energy systems. Alumni pursue diverse careers as design, project, or systems engineers, while others continue studies through MSc programs in Mechanical Engineering, Sustainable Energy, or doctoral research.
