As an MA (Hons) French student, you'll refine your language and communication abilities to advanced proficiency by exploring French and Francophone linguistics, literature, and cultural studies. The program offers research-focused specializations spanning medieval to contemporary literature, political studies, performance arts, intellectual history, postcolonial theory, gender studies, film adaptation, modern philosophy, creative writing, and translation studies. This four or five-year degree, administered by the School of Modern Languages, begins with foundational training in French language and cultural studies during the first two years, enhancing your analytical, oral, written, and translation competencies. Your first year includes two additional subjects alongside French, typically continuing with at least one into second year. Learn more about our academic structure. Third-year students may apply for exchange programs at French partner universities, with overseas study counting toward degree requirements. The year abroad is optional, with an alternative integrated year abroad option followed by two Honours years. Honours-level coursework emphasizes communicative and transferable skills while engaging with contemporary French and Francophone discourse. Specialization options include political studies, cultural analysis, translation theory, creative writing, or literary studies from medieval to modern periods. StAndrews modern languages graduates emerge with exceptional linguistic skills, deep intercultural understanding, and versatile analytical and communication abilities applicable across diverse professional fields.
